1000 l external tanks for the F-14 Tomcat (1:48, Reskit)

A detailed 3D printed resin set of drop tanks, not an airplane model. The set contains a pair of external (ventral) auxiliary fuel tanks of 1000 liters for the carrier fighter Grumman F-14 Tomcat in 1:48 scale, including the pylons. It was precisely these tanks that gave the Tomcat its characteristic endurance on patrol over the fleet. The 3D print captures the smooth shape, the filler caps and the small details better than split plastic does, and there is no seam to clean up. The set is made by the Ukrainian firm Reskit; it suits the common F-14 kits in this scale.

Use and fitting

• Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water; that takes the remains of uncured resin off the print.
• Cut the print supports off with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw; do not snap them.
• Sand the marks left by the supports away gently, always with protection for your airways, ideally wet.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); cement for plastic does not bond resin.
• Fit the tanks onto the pylons symmetrically; watch for the same angle and orientation on both pieces.

Painting tips

Apply a primer, then the color according to the finish of the machine. A smooth surface reveals every unevenness, so sand it over carefully. Runs at the caps and traces of service are added by a thin wash and filters.

For modelers who are building the F-14 in 1:48 and want to complete the machine with faithful drop tanks. Working with 3D printed resin presupposes experience.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package. Use a respirator and ventilate when sanding resin.
