The plug follows the shape of a bay from a specific kit, not the aircraft in general. This set belongs to the Hasegawa kit in 1:48 scale. We also carry other Phantom plug sets — for the Zoukei-Mura kit in 1:48 scale, for the Academy kit in 1:48 scale, and also for the Hasegawa kit in 1:72 scale, which is a different set from this one. Before ordering, check your model's box and confirm the manufacturer and scale — mixing up the kit or scale is the most common reason this item gets returned.
The landing gear bay is a deep cavity that the modeler paints first. Before spraying the model from the outside, it has to be masked, or overspray will ruin the finished interior. Tape and cotton wool are hard to stuff into a deep, irregular cavity and still do not seal it properly. The plug is inserted into the bay, fills and seals it exactly; the model is sprayed, and once it dries, the plug is pulled out. It also protects against dust and sanding grit. The material is flexible foam — it compresses in the bay and seals itself, so it does not need to fit to within a fraction of a millimeter like a rigid printed insert, and it holds without glue.
The F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine multirole fighter, one of the most widely used combat aircraft of the Cold War. It is unmistakable for its anhedral outer wing panels and drooped horizontal tail surfaces. Service with the Air Force, the Navy and numerous foreign operators made it a modeling evergreen — which is exactly why several kit manufacturers offer it in 1:48, each with its own bay shape.
