A set of masking stencils for spraying a tiger-pattern camouflage onto a model of the F/A-18C aircraft in 1:48 scale. The finish carries the markings of VMFA(AW)-224 Bengals.
Responsibility details are not available.
Tiger camouflage is one of the most demanding finishes that can be done on a model. The stripes have to pass across edges, panels and underwing stores while keeping the same width and rhythm. Drawing them by hand is slow and imprecise; a set of masks cuts the shapes for you and makes sure the pattern matches on both sides of the fuselage. It is meant for a model of the F/A-18C aircraft in 1:48 scale in the finish that carries the markings of VMFA(AW)-224 Bengals.
The stencils are stuck onto a finished, dry coat of the base shade, that is, before spraying the next color, never after it. Press the edges down carefully, above all where a mask passes across an edge or a groove. Then apply the paint in thin coats and aim perpendicular to the surface, so that it does not creep under the edge of the mask. Lift the stencils off as soon as the paint has set, not after it has cured completely; pull them away at an angle to the rear, not straight up from the surface.
Test the adhesion on a less visible place and, if necessary, reduce the tack of the stencils by sticking them to a clean surface and peeling them off again. The surface must be free of dust and grease. After lifting them off, check the edges against the light; small seepage can be corrected with a brush before clear coat is added. Remove glue residue from the surface gently, so that no matte traces are left under the gloss layer.
For modelers who want to spray a demanding finish rather than build it up from decals. The model, paints and clear coat are not included, unless stated otherwise.
