About product

F6F-3 Hellcat - early cowling with closed cowl flaps 1:48, Quickboost

A replacement resin engine cowling for a model of the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. According to the name this is the early version of the cowling, and the cowl flaps are cast in the closed position. This combination is intended for a model in the in-flight configuration: the cowling forms a smooth continuous ring that cannot be seen into, and the build is therefore noticeably simpler than with the variant with open flaps.

The real subject

The cowling of the Hellcat wraps around the radial engine and on its rear there are flaps by which the flow of cooling air was controlled. Closed flaps match flight at higher speed, when a smaller quantity of air cools the engine as well and the crew minimizes drag. Early and late cowlings on this type differed in details of their shaping, so the choice of variant has to do with which particular production series you want to bring your model closer to.

Fitting and painting tips

First wash the resin castings in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent from the mold disappears, as paint does not hold under it. Because the flaps are closed, you do not have to deal with the interior - all the more does a clean transition between the cowling and the fuselage decide the result. Cut the casting block off, level the seating surface on glass with sandpaper and keep trying it dry; fill any hairline gap with a thicker super glue rather than with putty, as it holds better and can be sanded right away. Resin holds paint worse than plastic, so do not forget the primer before the paint.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a Hellcat in the flying attitude on a display stand.
  • Those who want a more accurate shape for the early cowling.
  • Builders who are bothered by the seam left after gluing a plastic cowling from two parts.
  • Beginners in working with resin - a closed cowling calls for no painting of the interior.

The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Closed flaps match flight at higher speed. If you are building a model in the flying attitude on a display stand, it is the more logical choice than open flaps.

No. Closed flaps let no view inside, so you do not have to deal with the inner space.

Level the seating surface on sandpaper laid on glass and keep trying it dry. Fill a small gap with a thicker super glue, which can be sanded right away.

Grumman F9F-2 Panther – 3D-printed color interior (for the Trumpeter kit) is a pre-painted 3D-printed cockpit set from Quinta Studio in 1:48 scale. It is applied like a wet decal, but it has a real three-dimensional relief, so the cockpit looks photorealistic without painting. It is not a model – it is a detail accessory for a kit that you have to own.
