A resin replacement for the engine cowling of a model of the carrier fighter Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit. According to its name the casting is in the late form of the cowling and with the cooling flaps in the open position, that is, in the state in which the machine stands on deck or warms its engine up. The Quickboost line from Aires relies on casting the whole cowling in one piece, which does away with gluing two halves together and then hunting for the seam on a circular section.
The Hellcat was a carrier fighter of the US Navy with a large radial engine around which the cowling is built. The cooling flaps at the rear of the cowling regulated the flow of air over the cylinders: during taxiing, takeoff and climb they opened, and in fast flight they closed down. The position of the flaps is therefore not an extra detail but information about what the model is doing at that moment: open flaps belong to a scene on deck, not to a model in a flying pose.
Wash the resin castings first in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent, beneath which paint does not hold, disappears. Open flaps mean that one can see into the cowling, so paint the engine and the inner wall of the cowling before you close the assembly. The casting block on a cowling tends to be on the front ring or at the rear: cut it off with a saw and level the face on abrasive paper laid on glass, otherwise the cowling will seat crooked. Glue with a cyanoacrylate gel in small sections around the circumference and keep checking that it stays true to the axis of the fuselage.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
