Two GBU-10 Paveway I bombs with ablative fire protection, with tail and lifting surfaces of the BSU-37/B and BSU-3A/B rendition, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The same pair of bombs as in the basic version, this time with a protective treatment against fire. The difference is visible on the surface of the body, and it is precisely because of it that the manufacturer lists the two renditions separately.
The experience from the decks of aircraft carriers was harsh. A fire could set alight ordnance prepared for loading within a few minutes, and the explosions that followed tore apart the whole stern. The answer became an ablative coating that absorbs heat and gradually evaporates, so the charge inside stays below the critical temperature considerably longer and the crew gains time to fight the fire. A store on deck therefore used to hold rounds with and without the treatment side by side, and photographs from different years differ in this respect. Bodies with this treatment have a noticeably rougher surface and a different shade from the smooth bombs without the protection.
The texture of the coating is suggested by paint with an admixture of coarser pigment, or by spraying from a greater distance, when the droplets flash off while still in flight and the surface roughens. Make a trial on an offcut of the casting block, not straight on the finished body. The resulting shade tends to be noticeably warmer than on the usual olive ordnance. Keep the letters and numbers on the body thin, as on a rough surface they easily bleed.
The package covers two bombs in the thermally protected rendition.
