A sizeable injection-molded plastic model of the Lockheed SR-71B Blackbird in 1:48 scale from Revell. This is the two-seat trainer version of the famous Blackbird, with a second, raised cockpit for the instructor. The model offers a detailed interior, engines that can be built either installed or exposed, landing gear in the retracted or extended position, and a display stand. There is a choice of decals in USAF or NASA markings.
The SR-71 Blackbird was an American strategic reconnaissance aircraft able to fly at more than three times the speed of sound at great altitude. It was powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney J58 engines and its airframe was largely titanium so that it could withstand aerodynamic heating. The SR-71B trainer version was used to train pilots and is recognizable by its raised rear cockpit for the instructor, with better visibility. It was one of the fastest piloted aircraft of its day.
Given the size and the number of parts, this is a more demanding build suited to more experienced modelers. Glue the parts with modeling cement for plastic and fill and sand the large fuselage joints carefully. The characteristic flat black finish of the Blackbird benefits from a good primer and an airbrush; to bring it to life, shade the surfaces subtly and pick out the panels. Decide in advance whether you want the engines and landing gear displayed open or closed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
