A plastic kit of the single-seat fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the E-3 and E-4 versions in 1:48 scale from the British manufacturer Airfix. The model comes from a modern tooling and contains parts in gray polystyrene, clear parts for the cockpit canopy and a decal sheet that makes it possible to build the machine in several schemes.
The E version, nicknamed Emil, was the main production variant of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. It was powered by the liquid-cooled inverted twelve-cylinder Daimler-Benz DB 601 with direct fuel injection, which unlike carburetor engines tolerated negative g. The type had an all-metal structure, a cantilever wing with automatic slots on the leading edge and a narrow landing gear track, which made demands on the pilot during takeoff and landing. The E-3 variant carried cannon in the wing, and on the E-4 variant the armament and the protection of the pilot were further modified. The Emil was deployed from 1939 to 1941 on the Western as well as the Eastern Front and it is one of the best-known fighters of its time.
Start the build with the cockpit, where a fine rendition of the instrument panel and the belts pays off. Glue the parts with liquid cement for polystyrene, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action. Mask the cockpit canopy before spraying, or use a ready-made mask. The camouflage transitions on the fuselage are sprayed best in 1:48 with an airbrush at low pressure and with a fine line, and on the wing then full areas with sharp edges. Apply a gloss varnish under the decals, once finished unify the surface with a matte varnish and bring out the panel lines gently.
