An injection-molded plastic kit of the supersonic Mirage IIIO fighter in 1:48 scale. This is the Australian version of the French Mirage III delta fighter, which the name links to the Royal Australian Air Force and to the ARDU. The number of parts, the contents of the decal sheet and any photo-etch and masks are given on the box of the kit.
The Mirage III is a single-engined supersonic fighter with a delta wing and no horizontal tail surfaces, and one of the most successful export aircraft of postwar France. The Australian Mirage IIIO version came out of licensed production and served in the Royal Australian Air Force from the mid-1960s until the end of the 1980s. The abbreviation ARDU stands for the Australian aircraft research and development unit, whose machines differed from service aircraft in their conspicuous test markings with bold stripes.
On delta fighters the work shows most at the joints of the wing to the fuselage and on the leading edges, so sand and polish them carefully. The cockpit and the nose gear bay go in before the fuselage is closed up, so plan the sequence in advance. Natural metal surfaces call for a perfectly smooth base, on which a glossy metal shade then comes into its own. The bold stripes of the test scheme are easier to spray through a mask than to apply from large decals. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals and seal the surface again once they have dried.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
