Two castings of the Mk.84 aerial bomb with the BSU-50 retarding tail in 1:48 scale for models of heavy bombers.
Responsibility details are not available.
A pair of resin castings of the heaviest ordinary American aerial bomb of the two thousand pound class, completed with the BSU-50 retarding tail section. In 1:48 one piece measures roughly eight centimeters, so on a rack it looks really massive.
A bare Mk.84 falls freely and is released from altitude. The BSU-50 section adds an inflatable retarding bag that unfolds after release and brakes the bomb sharply. The aircraft thus manages to leave the area before the charge goes off, and can attack from low altitude. That is exactly why you will meet this tail even on machines that otherwise work from high levels. In a display case this pair therefore tells a different story than a smooth bomb: it hints at a particular method of attack, not just a hung load.
First look the casting over against the light to see whether it has bubbles where it passes into the tail; fill any cavities with a drop of super glue dusted with baking soda. Next comes removing the casting block and a light sanding under running water, so that dust is not released into the air. Mark the axis of the bomb with a pencil, so that you seat the suspension lugs in one plane. At the end check whether both pieces hang at the same height, because the viewer's eye spots an asymmetry at once.
Paints and glue are not supplied with the castings.
