About product

P-51 B/C nose mask 1:48 (Omask, for the Eduard kit)

A set of masking templates for the nose (engine) section of a P-51 B/C Mustang model in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Omask. The templates are cut from masking material into their final shape: you only peel them off, lay them in the right place and spray. It is not a kit and it is not a resin part: it is an aid for painting, so you have to have the aircraft model itself.

Which kit it is intended for

The mask is cut for the P-51 B/C kit in 1:48 scale from Eduard. The shapes of the templates follow that particular plastic part, so they need not fit a model from another brand: a different breakdown of parts, different radii, different spacing. If you are building a Mustang from another manufacturer, count on the mask possibly not lining up. Watch the version too: the P-51 B/C (framed canopy, razorback) and the P-51D (bubble canopy) are different aircraft with a differently shaped nose, and the mask for the B/C is not intended for the D.

Why a template and not ordinary tape

The nose of the Mustang is a complex, doubly curved shape. Masking it by hand with tape means cutting, adjusting and patching in small pieces; it is slow, a jagged boundary appears along the side and paint likes to creep underneath. A pre-cut template gives a sharp, clean and repeatable boundary exactly where it should be, even the second time round if the painting does not go well. It saves tens of minutes and, above all, removes the most common source of frustration: paint seeping under imperfectly pressed tape.

Usage tips

The base has to be clean, degreased and dry, otherwise the mask will not hold. Press the template down carefully along the whole boundary (a toothpick or a blunt dental tool works well) so that paint cannot creep underneath. Spray thin coats: a heavy coat forms a ridge at the boundary. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, not several days later, and peel it at an acute angle rather than straight up. The exact areas that the individual templates cover are given in the manufacturer's instructions; if you need to mask a particular area, check the contents of the set beforehand.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the P-51 B/C in 1:48 from Eduard who paint with an airbrush
  • Modelers who want a sharp boundary with no paint creeping underneath
  • Those who do not want to spend an evening cutting tape into the complex shape of the nose
  • Beginners who struggle with masking curved surfaces by hand

The mask is an aid for painting. The aircraft model and the paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of masking templates, that is, an aid for painting. You have to obtain the P-51 B/C model in 1:48 scale separately, and the paints as well.

The mask is cut for the P-51 B/C 1:48 kit from Eduard. On a model from another brand it need not line up, because the shape and the breakdown of parts differ. Please check this before you buy.

The nose of the Mustang is doubly curved. You would have to cut and piece the tape together laboriously, the boundary would come out jagged and paint would like to creep underneath. A pre-cut template gives a sharp, repeatable boundary in a moment.

It will not. The P-51 B/C and the P-51D are different versions with a differently shaped nose and canopy. Buy the mask intended for the version you are actually building.
