Four R-27EP guided missiles, the version of the R-27 family with a passive radar seeker head, which carries the name AA-10 Alamo-F in the Western code. Resin, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The R-27 family was born in the 1970s as the main weapon for the MiG-29 and Su-27 pair then coming into service. The designers conceived it in modular fashion: a common body to which a different seeker head and a different motor section are attached according to the task. That is exactly why the family has so many members and exactly why they are so easily mixed up on models. The recognition mark of the whole series is the characteristic control surfaces in the middle of the body, whose shape recalls butterfly wings and which modelers nickname the butterfly.
The letter E points to the version with a more powerful motor and therefore a longer range, while the second letter points to the method of guidance. This version has neither an active nor an infrared seeker head: it listens to the radiation of the opponent's radar and homes on its source. It was a fairly rare weapon, one you will seldom see in photographs of period loads, and for that very reason it suits a build where the armament arrangement is meant to look out of the ordinary.
Four missiles are supplied, that is enough for two inner and two outer stations. The castings have the control surfaces separate, or carry them directly on the body depending on the particular mold.
During the build take care that all four missiles have their surfaces turned the same way. Mismatched rotation is more conspicuous on a finished model than any error in shade.
