A resin accessory for the model of the carrier aircraft Lockheed S-3 Viking in 1:48 scale. According to the product name it contains a finely rendered fan face for the intake and a turbine for the exhaust. The model thus gains what a plastic kit usually handles with no more than a suggested disc or an empty tube: legible blading at both ends of the engine nacelle.
The S-3 Viking was a carrier-based anti-submarine and reconnaissance aircraft of the US Navy with a pair of turbofan engines slung in nacelles under the wing. The nacelles sit low and are fairly short, so both the intake and the exhaust really are visible from a normal viewing distance – on a model in a display case this is one of the first places where an empty opening gives away that there is nothing inside. That is exactly why fan and turbine sets pay off on this type.
First wash the resin castings in lukewarm water with detergent so that the mold release agent, under which paint will not hold, disappears. Paint and assemble both parts before you set them into the nacelle – after that you cannot get inside with a brush. A light metallic shade suits the fan blades, and a darker one, toward burnt metal, the exhaust turbine; both come out only after a thin dark wash that picks out the gaps between the blades. Mix metallic paints thoroughly, as the pigment settles to the bottom, and apply them over a smooth surface. Do not use a gloss clear coat inside the nacelle – reflections reduce the impression of depth.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
