The set cast in modeling resin from the maker CMK is intended for swapping the wing armament on a plastic kit of the Supermarine Spitfire in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft; in the package there are resin parts that are fitted into a model from another maker. You have to obtain the aircraft itself separately.
The so-called universal type C wing was designed so that it could be fitted either with a pair of 20 mm cannons supplemented by machine guns or with a stronger cannon arrangement. The recognition features are the shape and position of the covers over the breeches of the weapons, the shape of the bulges on the upper skin and the placement of the barrel ports on the leading edge. It is precisely these details that tend to be soft on injected plastic, with thick edges and blind holes instead of real ports, and it is precisely these that the resin casting deals with.
The procedure has three steps. First cut the original molded barrels and covers off the plastic wing, best with a fine modeling saw or a knife rather than nippers, so that the plastic does not ripple. Then level the surface with a file and abrasive paper until the plane of the leading edge sits right. Only after that comes the dry test: lay the part on without glue, check the angle of the barrel against the longitudinal axis and sand any gap down. Wash the resin parts in warm water with detergent beforehand so that the residue of the mold release agent disappears, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and glue with cyanoacrylate glue. When sanding resin, use a respirator or sand wet, as resin dust is not to be inhaled.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
