Fishtail exhausts for the Spitfire Mk.IXe and TR.9, 1:48

An accessory exhaust set for a model of the British Spitfire fighter in the Mk.IXe version and the two-seat TR.9, in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but a replacement part. The fishtail shape of the outlet, which widens toward the rear into a flat fan, is unmistakable on late Spitfires and in plastic it is usually blind, with the mold seam running exactly across the outlet.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off the casting blocks with a fine saw and sand the cut surface. Wash the resin in lukewarm water with detergent before painting because of the mold release agent. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). A metallic look is achieved by layering dark steel and brownish shades. Draw the exhaust streaks backwards along the airflow and use them sparingly, because too much black takes away from the effect. Fit the exhausts only after the cowling has had its base coat.
