The Kitty Hawk 80147 Su-17 and Su-22 UM-3K is a 1:48 plastic kit of the two-seat trainer version of the Soviet fighter-bomber.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat combat trainer with variable geometry of the outer wing panels. From the box both the Soviet form and the export counterpart can be built; from the outside the two machines cannot be told apart and differ only in equipment, which is why the maker carries them in one package. The cockpit is a two-seater and well worked out, and photo-etched parts are included. This is the trainer form of the single-seat versions, which the maker offers separately.
The two-seat trainer version came about so that pilots could convert onto the type with an instructor on board. The nose had to give way to the second station, so it took a different shape and the machine has a noticeably humped spine at first glance. The aircraft remained fully combat-capable and in a number of countries it was also used for attacks on ground targets and for reconnaissance. In the air forces of the Warsaw Pact countries it was among the machines on which whole generations of pilots were trained.
The two-seat cockpit is the dominant feature of the model, so finish and paint it before you join the fuselage halves, and do not leave the belts off the seats. Cover the long glazing with strips of mask, as filler is harder to clean up in the framing. Glue the swiveling wing ends only after the base color has dried. For camouflage with hard edges, reach for masking putty or cut templates.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
