An injection-molded plastic kit of the American carrier jet fighter Grumman F9F-2 Panther in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The package contains parts in gray plastic, a clear canopy and a decal sheet; the particular contents depend on the current release. A compact model with a straight wing, it is a rewarding project even for less experienced modelers.
The F9F Panther was one of the first successful carrier jet fighters of the US Navy. It was powered by a single jet engine and differed from later aircraft in its classic straight (unswept) wing, which carried tip tanks at its ends. Panthers made a marked mark on the fighting of the Korean War, where they served as fighters and as attack machines. The F9F-2 version was one of the basic renderings; machines designated -2B could carry bombs and rockets under the wings, and later this equipment became standard.
Finish and paint the cockpit and the seat before fitting the clear canopy, which is worth masking. Assemble and shade the intake ducts and the exhaust so that bare plastic cannot be seen inside. Fit the tip tanks and the external stores only at the end. An overall dark blue finish is typical of US Navy carrier machines – an airbrush is ideal, accentuate the panel lines discreetly with a wash and unify the surface with satin or matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
