Kitty Hawk 80135 XF5U-1 is a 1:48 plastic kit of the American experimental aircraft with a circular wing, nicknamed the Flying Pancake.

An injection-molded plastic kit of the experimental aircraft in 1:48 scale. It was the first treatment of this shape by an established manufacturer in this scale. The whole circular wing, which is the fuselage at the same time, is made up of two shells; between them go the cockpit, the landing gear bays and two large exhaust pipes. The number of parts is small for the scale, so the build moves along quickly. Photo-etched belts for the seat are in the box as well.
The Vought XF5U-1 was an attempt to build a fighter that would take off almost from a standstill. Instead of a conventional wing it had a flat circular shape, and at its tips two large propellers driven by a pair of radial engines housed inside. The arrangement was to give the aircraft an enormous range of speeds, from almost hovering to high speed in level flight. A smaller and lighter predecessor of similar shape did fly, but the XF5U-1 itself never got into the air: it was plagued by vibration of the drive, and the taxi tests produced only short hops. The program ended in 1947, at the time when jet aircraft were coming in.
The joint of the two shells runs all the way round and it is the main work on the model: glue it in sections, clamp it with clothespins and then level the seam with putty and sanding. Finish the interior before you join the shells. A natural duralumin metal finish looks best on a perfectly smooth base, so do not underestimate the sanding and lay a gloss base coat before the silver layer.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
