The hull of today's Chinese aircraft carrier was built at a Ukrainian shipyard back in the 1980s as part of a Soviet program. After the breakup of the Soviet Union the construction stalled, the part-built vessel was sold, and China took over its completion and conversion. It entered service as the first Chinese aircraft carrier and serves above all to train carrier crews and to prove out procedures that newer vessels then take over.
The parts are injection-molded in several colors matching the real paint scheme, so a presentable model can be built even without an airbrush. Anyone who wishes can of course go over the surface and fine-tune the shades to their own idea, but the basic impression is held by the plastic itself. For a builder with no spraying equipment, or for a quicker build, it is a convenient route.
The model captures the vessel after the 2024 refit. Carrier aircraft and helicopters in the same scale, the hangar space, a working elevator and rotating armament elements are included. The built piece exceeds forty-three centimeters in length, so it calls for a longer shelf. Decals round out the deck markings and lettering.
The small aerials and masts on the island superstructure are delicate; separate them only at the moment of fitting. The deck comes out well when a thin dark line is laid into the joints and the surface is lightly matted down. Arrange the aircraft so that some stand with folded wings at the edge and others are getting ready to launch; the scene thereby gains a story and the model stops looking like a mere display-case mockup. Before laying the decals on, do not forget to clear-coat the deck surface with a gloss layer, or white edges will appear on the matte surface.
