About product

1:700 HMS Jupiter - J class destroyer, Aoshima

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British destroyer HMS Jupiter in 1:700 scale from the Japanese maker Aoshima. It belongs to the Water Line range, which is built as a model on the surface: the underwater part of the hull is not glued on and the finished piece sits on a flat base or in a diorama of the sea surface.

The real subject

HMS Jupiter was a J class destroyer, one of the new flotilla classes with which the Royal Navy entered the Second World War. In January 1942 she sank the Japanese submarine I-60. Her end came on 27 February 1942 - as part of the Allied ABDA force she took part in the Battle of the Java Sea and was lost in it.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 scale what decides is the cleanliness of the joints and the thinness of the superstructures. It pays to replace the plastic masts and railings with photo-etched parts and to clean out the gun barrels with a drill bit. Apply the paints with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the engraved detail is not lost - British wartime schemes live on the transitions between surfaces. Be sparing with weathering, as on so small a hull it quickly overwhelms the detail.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of British destroyers in 1:700
  • modelers who build the Java Sea theater
  • more experienced builders of small ship models
  • anyone interested in Royal Navy equipment of 1939 to 1942

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
