About product

IJN Takao 1:700, Very Fire, the Deluxe edition

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese heavy cruiser Takao in 1:700 scale from Very Fire. The kit builds as a full hull, that is with the whole hull including the underwater part. What Deluxe means: besides the plastic, the box holds a complete upgrade set, photo-etch, turned brass barrels, 3D-printed parts, a wooden deck and a metal chain. Precisely because the Deluxe version is the only one offered for this ship, you get details that on an ordinary kit would be paid-for aftermarket.

Mind the scale: 1:700 is a small scale, and the finished cruiser comes out at roughly 29 cm, markedly less than models in 1:350. Do not expect a giant. On the other hand 1:700 is the most widespread ship scale: the model fits an ordinary display case, sits well beside other ships in a collection and accessories for it are widely available.

The real subject

The Takao was the first of the four ships of the class of the same name, the largest cruisers of the Japanese fleet when they were built. Her unmistakable hallmark is the enormous, fortress-like bridge structure, roughly three times the volume of that on the previous class. It was created so that the ship could serve as the flagship of a formation, and it gives the cruiser a profile that is hard to mistake. The Takao was the only one of her class to survive the war, but after heavy torpedo damage in 1944 she never sailed again.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 everything is tiny, so have tweezers, a sharp scalpel and good light ready. The weight of the work lies in the superstructure, the armament, the railings and the rigging; do the railings and the ladders with the enclosed photo-etch, bent on a metal edge and bonded with super glue. At this scale the rigging is usually done with stretched sprue or fine thread, right at the very end. Spray the hull with an airbrush over a primer; bond the wooden deck on only after the surrounding plastic is painted, so that you do not dirty it. Decide in advance whether you want a full hull on a stand or the hull set into the water of a diorama.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the Imperial Japanese Navy and of cruisers
  • Modelers who want a detailed ship but have no room for a model in 1:350
  • More experienced builders; photo-etch and 3D parts in 1:700 call for a steady hand
  • Those who will appreciate photo-etch, brass and a wooden deck straight from the box

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

That besides the plastic parts the box holds a complete upgrade: photo-etch, turned brass barrels, 3D-printed parts, a wooden deck and a metal chain. You therefore do not have to buy railings or barrels separately.

In 1:700 scale the cruiser comes out at roughly 29 cm. It is a noticeably smaller model than ships in 1:350, but it fits comfortably into an ordinary display case and matches other models in this most widespread of ship scales.

The kit is designed as a full hull, that is with the whole hull including the underwater part, and it builds onto a stand.

It is a more demanding kit. The parts in 1:700 are very small and working with photo-etch and 3D-printed detail calls for a steady hand. At least basic experience with photo-etch is ideal.
