An injection-molded plastic kit of the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong in 1:700 scale from the maker Meng. The model belongs to this brand's ship line.
Shandong is the first aircraft carrier built in China itself; she entered service in December 2019. In design she follows on from an older ship of Soviet origin that China completed and operates under the name Liaoning, but she differs in the arrangement of the superstructure and of the internal equipment. Aircraft take off from a ski-jump ramp in the bow and land on arresting wires, an arrangement known by the abbreviation STOBAR. The air group consists of fighter aircraft and helicopters.
With ships in this scale a flat flight deck and a fine surface are what decide. Glue the hull on a flat surface and let it dry long enough, so that it does not bow. Paint the decks and the side of the hull separately and mask the transitions with tape; an airbrush and thin coats will give a cleaner result than a brush. The markings on the deck are best done with decals over a gloss coat, the surface then evened out with a matte one. The model benefits from a light bringing out of the detail with a dark wash and discreet traces of service on the sides. The finished model looks good on a simple stand or on a water surface made of acrylic gel.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
