About product

USS Baltimore CA-68 1943 in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter

The kit captures the American heavy cruiser USS Baltimore, the lead ship of the class of the same name, as she was in 1943 – that is, shortly after she entered service. The year in the name therefore describes the appearance of the ship in that year, not the year she was launched. The 1:700 scale is the standard for warships, so the model fits in among the other cruisers and aircraft carriers in a collection.

The real subject

Baltimore was the first ship of a new generation of American heavy cruisers, which were built without the interwar treaty limits on displacement. Compared with the older types she received stronger armor protection and a much denser anti-aircraft defense. The main battery was made up of nine guns of 203 mm caliber in three triple turrets, supported by dual-purpose guns of 127 mm caliber. Ships of this class served in the Pacific mainly as escorts for the fast carrier groups and as gunfire support for landing operations.

Building and painting tips

First decide whether you will build the model with a full hull on a base or as a waterline model set into the sea. Test fit the superstructures, masts and funnels dry first – in this scale any departure from the vertical shows at first glance. The hull and the decks paint well with an airbrush over a good base coat, while a brush will handle the small gun barrels. The engraved lines of the decks come out well after being brought out with a darker shade, and drybrushing will then pull out the detail of the boats and railings.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of US Navy warships in the uniform 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who build scenes from the fighting in the Pacific
  • Anyone interested in naval subjects of the Second World War with an eye for fine detail
  • Those who like to add photo-etched railings and masts to a model

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The building option depends on the contents of the particular boxing. Make the choice between a full hull and a waterline version according to the parts in the box.
