A kit of the American battleship USS Tennessee BB-43 in her 1941 appearance, 1:700 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Tennessee was the first unit of the class of the same name; she was launched in 1919 and entered service shortly after the First World War. She was powered by an unusual turbo-electric drive and her main armament consisted of twelve guns of 356 mm in four triple turrets. On the morning of December 7, 1941 she lay off Ford Island on the inboard side of a pair of ships, took bomb hits and was trapped alongside the quay for several days by the sunken giant next to her.
During 1942 and 1943 the ship went through such a deep rebuild that afterwards she looked completely different: the lattice masts disappeared, wide anti-torpedo bulges were added and a new superstructure appeared. The model captures the original interwar silhouette, that is, the shape carried by the photographs from the first day of the American war in the Pacific. Anyone building a Pearl Harbor scene needs exactly this version. In the same scale, ships are usually collected in groups, so further units of the Pacific fleet stand well beside it.
In 1:700 scale the hull comes out at about twenty-six centimeters. The hull and the superstructure are glued from individual parts, and the most work goes into carefully setting the masts and the fine platforms. Spraying the primer in a thin coat works well, so that the riveted detail of the deck is not lost, and it pays to set the wooden areas apart in a warmer shade. The model can also be built in a version with the hull cut off at the waterline and set into a water surface. A small scale forgives little in the proportions of height, which is why it is worth comparing the standing of the masts with a side elevation drawing before the glue sets.
