About product

AN/AAQ-28 LITENING - targeting pod, Eduard 1:72

This product is not an airplane model. It is a 3D-printed miniature of the AN/AAQ-28 LITENING targeting pod in 1:72 scale, that is, external equipment that hangs under the fuselage or under the wing of a finished combat aircraft model. The parts are made by direct 3D printing and are conceived as an easy-to-use accessory that replaces the less detailed plastic pod from the kit - or adds one to the model if the kit has none. The set contains one pod.

The real subject

The AN/AAQ-28 LITENING is a modern targeting and designating pod. Inside it carries a thermal imaging channel (FLIR), a daylight camera and a laser designator or rangefinder; it shows the crew the image of the target and allows it to be acquired and illuminated by laser for guided munitions. The system originated in Israel and later became one of the most widespread sets of its kind in the world. The pod is carried externally, on a pylon - it is used among others by machines of the F-16, F-15E and AV-8B Harrier types and by a number of other aircraft in many countries. That is exactly why its miniature can be used across modern combat aircraft models.

Use

  • Adding or replacing the targeting pod on a model of a modern combat aircraft in 1:72 scale.
  • Separate the part from the print supports with a sharp knife and gently sand the marks the supports leave.
  • Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) - polystyrene cement will not bond printed parts.
  • Degrease and prime before painting; the optics of the pod are usually done in gloss black or with a clear varnish in a golden tone.
  • Always check its position on the model against the particular aircraft and its pylon - the pod station differs from type to type.

Who the set is for

For modelers who build modern combat aircraft in 1:72 scale and want a realistic targeting pod instead of a simplified plastic part. Working with printed parts calls for a sharp knife, super glue and a little patience, but the use itself is simple.

The set is an accessory to a kit, it is not a model. It does not contain the aircraft kit, paints or glue. Sand the printed parts with respiratory protection.

FAQ

It is the designation of the LITENING targeting and designating pod - an external device with thermal imaging, a daylight camera and a laser that lets an aircraft find, acquire and laser-illuminate a target for guided munitions.

No. It is a standalone accessory - a miniature of an external pod. The aircraft model it hangs on has to be bought separately.

Models of modern combat aircraft in 1:72 scale that really carry the pod - typically the F-16, F-15E or AV-8B Harrier and others. Check the position and the pylon against the particular type.

Separate it from the print supports, sand the marks, degrease it and apply primer. It is bonded with super glue; ordinary plastic cement does not work.
