About product

3DF ASV Mk.II — 3D-Printed Radar Antennas for the Sunderland and Wellington (1:72)

A detail set from manufacturer 3DF brings fine 3D-printed antennas for the onboard radar ASV Mk.II for the British patrol aircraft Short Sunderland and Vickers Wellington in 1:72 scale. This is not an aircraft model — it is an accessory fitted onto a base kit from another manufacturer. 3D-printing technology allows thin rod and Yagi antennas to be made with a fineness injection-molded plastic cannot achieve; it is precisely these antenna bristles that turn an ordinary patrol aircraft into a convincing Coastal Command machine.

The Real Subject — ASV Mk.II Radar

ASV (Air-to-Surface Vessel) Mk.II was a British airborne radar for detecting surface targets, deployed from the early years of the Second World War. It operated in the metric band, so it needed large external antennas placed along the spine, sides of the fuselage, and under the wings. This equipment served the patrol and anti-submarine aircraft of RAF Coastal Command in the Battle of the Atlantic — among others the flying boats Short Sunderland and the bombers Vickers Wellington in their patrol versions. The characteristic antennas are the most conspicuous external feature of these aircraft, and without them a model looks unfinished.

Usage tips

Wash the 3D-printed parts with lukewarm water and dish soap before gluing and let them dry thoroughly — this removes residual print resin. Carefully cut off the thin supports with a sharp scalpel or a photo-etch saw, and gently sand down what remains. Glue with cyanoacrylate (super glue), ideally a thin formula that wicks into the joint; plastic cement does not work on these parts. Wear respiratory protection when sanding and work wet. The antennas are fragile — fit them only at the very end of the build, after painting and decals. Before painting, we recommend a light coat of primer.

Who the Set Is For

  • Modelers building the Sunderland or Wellington in a patrol/anti-submarine version
  • Anyone interested in RAF Coastal Command hardware and the Battle of the Atlantic
  • More experienced builders who can handle very fine 3D-printed parts
  • Anyone for whom the simplified box antennas aren't enough and who wants an authentic silhouette

This is an accessory set, not a complete model. The base aircraft kit, glue, paints, and decals are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a detail set of 3D-printed antennas for the ASV Mk.II radar. The base Sunderland or Wellington kit must be purchased separately.

Cyanoacrylate (super glue). Ordinary plastic cement, which works on polystyrene, will not bond these parts.

Wash them with lukewarm water and dish soap, let them dry, cut off the print supports with a sharp scalpel, and gently sand down the marks left behind, using respiratory protection.
