A set of 3D-printed balance weights for the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in 1:72 scale from the brand 3DF. Let us be clear at once: this is NOT an aircraft kit but a set of small replacement parts with which you improve a finished plastic kit. And watch the scale - this item is 1:72, that is, for the smaller models. The same accessory is also made in the larger 1:48 scale; the parts differ in size and cannot be swapped between scales.
The control surfaces of the Bf 109 - first and foremost the ailerons - carried small mass weights mounted on thin arms that visibly project from the surface. Their task is the aerodynamic and mass balancing of the control surface: they prevent it from oscillating dangerously (flutter) at high speeds and keep the control forces on the stick within reasonable limits.
In 1:72 scale the whole problem is sharper still than on larger models. The feature here is really tiny and extremely thin - and that is exactly what an injection mold cannot do. The plastic version tends to be bulky and indistinct, or it is missing from the kit altogether. Yet it is a characteristic mark of the Bf 109 silhouette that a connoisseur notices immediately. 3D printing manages detail that injection-molded plastic cannot reach, and in a small scale that difference shows most.
On 3D-printed parts cement for polystyrene does not take - the joint would fall apart. Glue with super glue (cyanoacrylate), or with epoxy. Wash the parts before painting in lukewarm soapy water - print resin residue would otherwise keep the paint from adhering. If you are going to clean anything up, always sand wet and do not inhale the dust, as it is harmful to health. Given the dimensions, work with tweezers over a mat and glue them right at the end of the build.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. The form of the balance features differs between Bf 109 versions - please check that the set matches the version and the kit you are building.
