1:72 D-Day Fighters Gift Set - an Airfix gift set with the fighters of Operation Overlord; the Gift Set edition normally comes with basic paints, glue and a brush.
Responsibility details are not available.
Britain's Airfix has put together a gift set devoted to the fighters that covered the Normandy landings from the air in June 1944. The 1:72 box brings several fighter models together, and in the spirit of the Gift Set edition the manufacturer normally adds basic paints, glue and a brush, so you can start building almost straight away.
Operation Overlord was the largest landing operation in history, and air superiority over the beaches was held by thousands of Allied aircraft. To avoid mistaken identity, the machines were given bold black and white invasion stripes on the wings and fuselage shortly before 6 June 1944 - today one of the most iconic features of aircraft camouflage anywhere. The fighters over Normandy struck at German columns, escorted bombers and protected the ships from the Luftwaffe.
The invasion stripes look best slightly irregular, just like the hastily sprayed originals - do not be afraid of small imperfections. For beginners we recommend building in sub-assemblies and brush-painting in two thin coats. Anyone who wants to lift the result further can add a fine wash into the panel lines.
The models in the set are unassembled and unpainted, but the basic equipment included with the Gift Set edition lets you get to work without buying anything else.
