FineMolds F-4E (Early) Vietnam War 1:72 is an unassembled plastic kit of the early version of the Phantom II — the first version with a built-in cannon in the nose — with decals for US Air Force aircraft from the time of the Vietnam War.
Responsibility details are not available.
An unassembled and unpainted injection-molded plastic kit of the McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II in its early form, 1:72 scale, from FineMolds — a Japanese brand known for the exceptional accuracy and fineness of its tooling. The tooling is modern: complete intake ducts all the way to the compressor face, separate cockpit side console inserts according to the version, the correct shape of the E version fin, linked horizontal tail surfaces and glazing for an open or a closed canopy. The package holds pylons and three drop tanks; armament and crew figures are not included (bombs and missiles are sold separately). The decals offer two US Air Force aircraft in Southeast Asia camouflage (green, light green, brown) — machines of the 34th and 4th Tactical Fighter Squadrons.
At the time of Vietnam the Phantom II was armed with guided missiles only — and it turned out that in close-in maneuvering combat that was not enough. The answer was the F-4E version: the first Phantom with a built-in rotary cannon right in the nose, together with a new radar in a smaller radome. The Early designation points to the early form of this version, which you recognize by two things: the shorter cannon fairing under the nose and the hard wing without leading-edge slats — the maneuvering slats that markedly improved the handling of later Phantoms in a hard turn came only later. This is exactly how the F-4E looked when it was flown over North Vietnam.
Glue with thin cement for polystyrene run into the seams by capillary action — FineMolds parts fit tightly, so very little glue is needed. Finish and paint the cockpit and the intake ducts before you close up the fuselage; on the Phantom you have to test the balance and add weight in the nose, otherwise the model will sit down on its tail. Spray the Southeast Asia camouflage with an airbrush over a primer and do the transitions freehand or with masking held off the surface. Lay a gloss coat under the decals (the sheet is very fine and densely printed), then a wash into the engraved lines and a matte or semi-matte final coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
