The corner of a hall and what can be built with it

The corner of an industrial building closes a scene off from two sides at once and still does not take up as much room as a whole structure. A wall with window openings in a regular rhythm, a base course and the corner itself give a scene a legible industrial setting that will carry both parked vehicles and the wreckage left by an air raid. In the smaller scale a whole passageway with a vehicle in it fits alongside as well, so the corner of the hall does not work merely as a backdrop but as a full part of the scene.

A rare size in the range

Acrylicos Vallejo of Barcelona runs its diorama building elements under the name Scenics and strikes the vast majority of them in the size that matches figures some five centimeters tall. The smaller size is the exception here: in the whole range of a hundred and six items there are only four such pieces, and they form an unbroken set of four with consecutive part numbers. Besides the corner of the hall it takes in the frontage of the same building, the corner of a French house and a piece of a French street.

What to watch out for

With the smaller size the rule is that the contrast must not be overdone. Joints drawn too dark break up the face of the wall and look like dirt when seen from a distance. It is advisable to thin the paint more than usual and to build the tone up in several transparent layers. It pays to back the window openings with dark paper so that the scene does not look empty, and only then to deal with the dust at the foot of the wall. It also helps to tell the base course from the face of the wall not only by tone but by the roughness of the surface, because at a small size it is above all the way a surface reflects light that carries the information. An overly glossy wall ruins a scene faster than an inexact shade.
