An injection-molded plastic kit of the American tactical transport aircraft in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian maker Roden. This boxing is the Arctic C-123J version: the box holds parts for ski landing gear and for a pair of auxiliary jet engines on the wingtips, and the decals cover aircraft of the Alaska National Guard. That is a visible difference from the basic C-123B and from the K version, which had additional jet engines under the wings. So take care when choosing: this is neither the usual B nor the K. The C-123 also comes in the smaller 1:144 scale from another maker; this model is markedly larger and more detailed.
The Fairchild C-123 Provider was a rugged twin-engine tactical transport with a cargo ramp in the tail, able to operate from short and unprepared strips. It served with the US Air Force from the mid-1950s and is best known from Vietnam, where it carried cargo and paratroops to improvised landing strips. Specially modified C-123 aircraft there also sprayed defoliants, among them Agent Orange, as part of Operation Ranch Hand, a chapter with health and political consequences to this day. The J version, which this boxing represents, is a different story: it came from the conversion of only ten aircraft for operation in the Arctic, in Alaska and in Greenland, among other things to supply the chain of distant early warning radar stations. It received retractable skis for landing on snow and ice and, on the wingtips, a pair of small auxiliary jet engines that added thrust on take-off at full load.
Roden works with short-run tooling: the parts tend to be fine, but fit is not a given, so count on cleaning up the parts, dry runs and filling, especially on the fuselage halves and the leading edges. The large glazed nose deserves careful masking, and a mask set comes in handy. Sort out nose weight before you close the fuselage; on a twin-engine model this large there is never enough of it. Spray the model with an airbrush over a primer; large areas are livened up by fine panel shading, a wash in the engraved lines and discreet weathering around the engines and the landing gear. Lay a gloss varnish under the decals and finally unify the surface with a matte or satin overcoat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
