About product

German E-Boat (Schnellboot) 1:72 - Airfix

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German fast motor torpedo boat Schnellboot (known to the Allies as the E-boat) from Airfix in 1:72 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is a large ship kit; for the exact contents of the box and any extras, follow the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The Schnellboote were fast attack craft of the Kriegsmarine with wooden hulls. Three diesel engines drove them, and with their high speed they were among the fastest combat craft of their class in the Second World War. They were armed with torpedoes and light cannons and were used for night raids on convoys, for minelaying and for patrolling in the English Channel and other waters.

Building and painting tips

With ships, glue and fill the hull carefully first so that no seams show on the sides. Paint the deck and the superstructures separately and fit them only after the base coat. Wooden deck surfaces will stand out with a thin wash in the grooves; if the kit contains photo-etched railings or details, fit them with cyanoacrylate at the very end. A stand or a cutout of the water surface (a waterline diorama) works well for display.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of Second World War naval subjects
  • For collectors of ships in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers who want to try building a hull and deck details

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a German fast attack craft of the Kriegsmarine with a wooden hull, armed with torpedoes; the Allies called it the E-boat.

The model is made by Airfix and it is an injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale.

The build and the painting can be approached in the classic way, with the full hull on a stand, or as a cutout of the water surface in a diorama - it depends on your intention and on what the kit allows.
