The German reconnaissance tank Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. J in 1:72 scale from Flyhawk. A plastic kit of a rare, heavily armored vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
A kit of one of the least usual German tanks. At first glance the J version looks like an ordinary Panzer II, except that its armor is several times thicker and its weight turned a light reconnaissance vehicle into a small heavy tank. It is exactly this contradiction that is interesting on a model: the vehicle looks squat and ungainly and at the same time keeps the dimensions of a light type. The maker is Flyhawk, a brand known for fine surface rendering and a large number of small parts.
The Ausf. J came about from a requirement for a reconnaissance tank that would survive fire. The solution was armor so thick that it had no equal on a small vehicle, and mobility paid for all of it: the vehicle was slow and cumbersome. Only a few dozen were built and their combat use was limited. For the modeler this is a subject that appears only rarely.
In 1:72 scale the parts are very small, so work over a mat, with fine tweezers, and dose the glue with a point. Finish and varnish the running gear before you close the hull up. Try the tracks dry on the wheels and tension them only once they have dried. The thick armor plates have a plain surface, so it pays to pick the welds and the edges out. Keep the weathering restrained; in this scale a heavy wash tends to flood the detail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
