About product

Gosling Mk.I / Widgeon, 1:72 — Kovozavody Prostejov (KP)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the small twin-engine amphibious aircraft Grumman G-44 Widgeon in 1:72 scale by the long-established Czech manufacturer Kovozavody Prostejov (KP) of Prostejov. This boxing focuses on the Gosling Mk.I version — the British (Commonwealth) designation for the type supplied under wartime cooperation. KP today builds on modern short-run tooling, so the kit offers fine engraving but by its nature suits somewhat more experienced builders.

The real subject

The Grumman G-44 Widgeon was a small twin-engine amphibious flying boat, a smaller relative of the larger Grumman Goose. It appeared at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s as a five-seat aircraft for civilian and military use, and thanks to its ability to land on both water and land it was suited to coastal patrol duty, liaison and light transport. During the Second World War it served with a number of Allied forces under various designations; British and Commonwealth air forces used the name Gosling for their supplied aircraft, while elsewhere it flew as the Widgeon or under naval and military designations. It was an unassuming but versatile type that performed useful patrol and liaison work.

Building and painting tips

For the plastic, use a thin liquid cement applied with a brush, and test-fit the boat-type hull joints beforehand so they close without gaps. Mask the cockpit glazing and apply the clear lacquer last. Apply a primer before painting; both period patrol schemes and civilian colors come out best with an airbrush. Consider adding a display stand for an in-flight pose. Use a gloss coat under the decals and unify the finish with a final topcoat.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in amphibians and flying boats of the Second World War
  • Collectors of less common Allied aircraft
  • Fans of the Grumman brand and flying-boat hulls
  • Somewhat more experienced modelers comfortable with a short-run kit

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
