An injection-molded plastic model of the Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik in 1:72 scale from Tamiya (the War Bird Collection line). The kit faithfully captures the robust shape of this Soviet ground-attack aircraft and is laid out for an easy build. The kit holds parts for the intake duct, the radiator and the oil cooler, which make it possible to reproduce the engine cooling system accurately.
The Il-2 Shturmovik was the main Soviet ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War, intended to destroy ground targets, tanks and columns. Its characteristic feature was an armored shell integrated directly into the structure of the airframe, which protected the pilot, the engine and the fuel tank from fire from the ground. It was built in enormous numbers - over 36000 examples in all - which makes it one of the most heavily produced combat aircraft in history. The Soviets used it en masse on the Eastern Front.
Use liquid cement for plastic and finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage. Shturmoviks typically wore green (or two-tone) camouflage on the upper surfaces and light blue undersides; a primer and flat paints applied with an airbrush pay off. The heavily worn surface of combat machines comes into its own with chipped paint, dust and mud pigments and a wash in the panel lines.
