An injection-molded plastic model of the American fighter P-51D-5 Mustang in 1:72 scale from Eduard, in the Weekend edition. The Weekend edition builds on Eduard's modern tooling, but without photo-etched parts and masks, with decals for four color schemes. The D-5 version is one of the first production blocks of the D series with a bubble canopy and still without the later dorsal fin fillet that later aircraft received.
The North American P-51D Mustang was one of the most successful long-range fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by the license-built Packard Merlin engine, and thanks to its long range it escorted bomber formations deep over Germany. The D-5 block introduced the new bubble canopy, which dramatically improved the view from the cockpit compared with earlier razorback versions. Without the dorsal fin fillet, the aircraft had more sensitive directional stability under certain conditions, which a later modification addressed.
Glue the plastic with thin liquid modeling cement and sand the joints smooth. Since the Weekend edition has no masks, it is worth getting a masking set or masking by hand for the segmented bubble canopy. Apply a primer before painting. Spray bare-metal finishes with an airbrush and metallic paints over a smooth base; you will get the characteristic invasion and identification stripes precisely with masking. Apply the decals over a gloss finish with a decal softener.
