The Polikarpov R-1 was a Soviet two-seat biplane intended for reconnaissance and light bombing. Its design goes back to the British DH.9A, which was measured up in detail in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and adapted to local materials and production methods. It was powered by the M-5, a domestic derivative of the Liberty V12 engine. The R-1 became the first Soviet aircraft built in series and in large numbers, and for many years it formed the backbone of training and line units; a floatplane variant existed as well. For the modeler it is interesting above all as a direct technical counterpart of the British original, with which it shares the basic shapes but differs in the details of the airframe, the armament and the finishes.
Proceed as with any biplane: first finish and paint the interior, then close the fuselage, seat the lower wing and only at the end put the upper wing on its struts with the help of a simple support. Check the dihedral and the alignment from the front and from above until the glue has cured. Fabric surfaces look better with a very subtle emphasis on the ribs, and a wooden propeller can be imitated by layering a light base color and translucent brown varnishes. Tension the rigging wires only after the varnish is on. Apply the decals onto a gloss base; a final matte varnish will even out the whole surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
