An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Republic P-47D Thunderbolt fighter in 1:72 scale from the firm Academy. The model captures the early P-47D version nicknamed Razorback after the high fuselage spine behind the cockpit, which had not yet been cut down for a bubble canopy. The kit has engraved panel lines and suggested riveting, a decently broken-up cockpit, landing gear doors that can optionally be positioned and several variants of external stores under the wings. It is a rewarding and straightforward build.
The P-47 Thunderbolt was among the most massive single-engine fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by a strong radial engine with a turbocharger, thanks to which it excelled at high altitude and was exceptionally tough. The Razorback version represents the older form with the glazing running into a raised spine. Thunderbolts served as escort fighters and as feared ground-attack aircraft striking at targets on the ground; they were famous for their ruggedness and for their ability to bring a pilot home even after heavy damage.
Paint and assemble the cockpit before closing the fuselage, and mask the canopy glazing and paint it along with the airframe. Some of the Thunderbolts flew in bare metal, and then shades of aluminum and polished metal and a fine differentiation of individual panels pay off. Bring out the panel lines and the riveting with a thin wash. Leave the pylons, tanks and bombs for the end and set them apart in color. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat, so that no whitish edge appears around them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
