About product

RF-4C/E Phantom II, 1:72, Italeri

An injection-molded plastic kit of the reconnaissance Phantom RF-4C/E in 1:72 scale from the Italian manufacturer Italeri. Note, this is not a combat fighter. The letter R means reconnaissance: the RF-4 has no built-in gun and no fighter radar. In their place it carries a set of photographic cameras and reconnaissance sensors in the nose, and therefore it has a differently shaped, longer and flatter nose that is distinguishable from the fighter version at first glance. That is the most important distinction of the whole product: anyone looking for the gun-armed F-4E will reach for a different kit. The box allows both main subversions to be built, the American RF-4C as well as the export RF-4E; they differ above all in the pylons of the inboard stations and in the design of the exhaust nozzles.

The real subject

The Phantom II was a two-seat jet machine with two afterburning engines and it became a symbol of air forces from the 1960s to the 1980s. The reconnaissance variant drew on the essentials: speed and range. The RF-4C was created for the US Air Force, and the RF-4E as an export version combining the reconnaissance equipment with the airframe and engines of the later fighter version; it flew among others in Germany, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Japan. The task of these machines was to fly over the target, photograph it and return safely, with no ability to defend themselves. Their protection was not armament but low flight and high speed.

Building and painting tips

Before the build, decide which version you are making, as the instructions branch at several steps. Use a thin cement for plastic applied by capillary action, and sand and fill the joints of the fuselage and the intakes. In 1:72 scale it pays to pick the cockpit out with a wash, otherwise it stays flat. Spray a primer before painting, always apply the decals onto a gloss coat and even the surface out at the end with a matte or semi-gloss clear.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers who want the reconnaissance Phantom rather than the combat one
  • For collectors of Cold War aircraft in the practical 1:72 scale
  • For the moderately advanced, as the build is manageable but wants sanded joints
  • For anyone interested in aerial photographic reconnaissance

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A fundamental one. The letter R means reconnaissance. The RF-4 has no built-in gun and no fighter radar; in their place it carries photographic cameras and sensors in the nose, and therefore it has a differently shaped, longer and flatter nose. Anyone who wants the gun-armed combat version needs a different kit.

Yes, the kit covers both subversions. The RF-4C served with the US Air Force and the RF-4E was the export variant. The differences are mainly in the pylons of the inboard stations and in the design of the exhaust nozzles, and the instructions will take you through them.

A moderately advanced modeler will manage it. The 1:72 scale means a reasonable number of parts, but count on filling and sanding the joints of the fuselage and the intakes, as is usual with older Phantoms in this scale.

The reconnaissance Phantom was essentially unarmed, as its protection was speed and low flight, not missiles. The typical configuration is drop tanks, not combat armament.
