A set of small resin wipers for a model of the Lockheed S-3 Viking carrier aircraft in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit. In 1:72 these are parts at the limit of what can be cast – injected plastic simply will not give this thickness, and most kits therefore either leave the wipers out or suggest them by engraving. A resin casting adds a thin arm that closes the area around the cockpit visually.
The S-3 Viking served the US Navy as a carrier-borne anti-submarine and reconnaissance machine with a working crew of four and extensive glazing at the front. It is exactly the large area of the windshields that makes the wipers a visible element even in a small scale: on the real aircraft they are on both sides of the windshield, and on a model they fill an otherwise empty transition between the glass and the nose.
First wash the resin castings in lukewarm soapy water, so that the release agent from the mold disappears, as paint does not hold under it. With parts of this size one iron rule applies: work over a tray or over an open bag and keep tweezers with a narrowed tip at hand. Paint the wipers in flat black while they are still on the casting block, cut them off with a new blade and glue them with a drop of super glue gel applied with the tip of a wire. Use as little glue as possible – curing cyanoacrylate makes a white bloom on glossy glazing. Leave the installation to the very end of the build, once the masks are off.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
