This injection-molded plastic kit captures the Soviet JS-4 heavy tank, one of the last representatives of the classic Soviet heavy tank concept. The small 1:72 scale lets you line up a whole range of heavy types without the display case overflowing. The kit is made by Trumpeter.
The JS-4, also listed as the IS-4, came about as a development line running parallel to the IS-3 tank. It received considerably heavier armor, a lengthened hull with seven road wheels on each side and the proven 122 mm gun. Production ran in Chelyabinsk in the first postwar years and stopped at a few hundred vehicles. For its day the tank was very heavy, which told on the reliability of the transmission and on how few bridges it could cross, and most of the vehicles built ended up with units in the Far East. Its successor already followed a different, lighter concept.
Because of the seven wheels per side, the running gear is the most demanding part of the JS-4 — finish and spray it before you close up the hull, and make sure all the wheels lie in one plane. Use thin polystyrene cement on the plastic. Apply the base green shade with an airbrush and lighten the upper surfaces. A dark wash will bring out the welds and the cast surfaces of the turret, while light chipping on the edges and dust on the fenders will give the model life.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
