About product

Supermarine Spitfire Prototype K5054 - Stages 2,3 and 4 (Test Flights) 1:72, IBG models

A limited-edition 3D-printed kit for experienced modelers in 1:72 scale from IBG models, created in cooperation with the MRM studio. The Test Flights set follows on from the Stage 1 release (the first flight) and captures the Spitfire prototype K5054 in the later test stages 2, 3 and 4. The package offers four nose variants, two fuselage versions and two wing versions, in both the original unarmed and the later armed configuration, so that different states of the machine's development can be built. A vacuum-formed canopy with the snap-vac system is included as well, in which printed frames are stuck onto the clear part without the need for conventional masking.

The real subject

K5054 was the first prototype of the legendary British Supermarine Spitfire fighter (Type 300), designed by the team of R. J. Mitchell. It first flew in March 1936 and over the following months went through a series of modifications and test flights, during which the shape of the airframe, the radiator and the armament were gradually refined. It was these later test stages that defined the form of the production Spitfire, which became one of the most famous aircraft of the Second World War.

Building and painting tips

This is a 3D-printed kit for experienced modelers. First wash the parts free of any residue, carefully cut off the print supports and casting blocks and clean them up with respiratory protection. Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Apply a primer before painting, which will reveal any surface imperfections. The clear canopy with printed snap-vac frames makes a clean color transition easier without masking; spray the airframe with an airbrush in thin coats.

Who the model is for

  • For experienced modelers with experience of resin and 3D-printed parts
  • For collectors of Spitfire history and aviation prototypes
  • For lovers of unconventional limited editions in 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a 3D-printed kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a 3D-printed kit. Because of the character of the parts it suits experienced modelers who can work with print supports and super glue.

The Test Flights set captures the later test stages 2, 3 and 4 of the K5054 prototype and follows on from the separate Stage 1 release devoted to the first flight.

The vacuum-formed clear canopy is supplied with printed frames that are stuck straight onto the part, so conventional masking of the glazing falls away when painting.
