About product

Italeri Vespa PX 125/150, 1978, 1:9 scale

The Vespa PX 125/150 of 1978 in 1:9 scale is a plastic kit from the Italian maker Italeri, built on completely new tooling. For a scooter, 1:9 is enormous: the finished model is around 19.5 cm long and it is a full display piece, not a trinket. The contents match: rubber tires, chrome-plated parts, a finely detailed engine and suspension, removable engine covers and a hinged seat, so even what is normally hidden can be seen. Decals and painting guides for several versions are included.

The real subject

The Vespa is an icon of Italian design and one of the best-known means of transport in the world. The PX range, introduced at the end of the 1970s, is the best-selling Vespa of all time: over three million were built and it stayed in production for an incredibly long time. Its typical features are the monocoque metal body, gear changing by a twist grip on the handlebar and the unmistakable silhouette with the side cowls. The PX is not just a means of transport, it is a symbol of a lifestyle and of the Made in Italy label. That is exactly why this model is different from military kits: it is aimed at Vespa collectors, design lovers and gift buyers, not only at history-minded modelers.

Building and painting tips

The body is what matters most. A Vespa is painted to a gloss finish, and gloss paint shows up every flaw without mercy — unlike a tank, where imperfections hide under a layer of dust and mud, here there is nowhere to hide. So fill the seams left by the part breakdown perfectly, sand the surface with progressively finer grits (2000 to 3000 grit wet is fine), lay down primer and correct any flaw at once, while you still can. Spray the color in thin coats. After the decals, a clear coat and some polishing are worth it: the model then takes on the wet look of real paint. Do not sand the chrome-plated parts and glue them only spot by spot so the glue does not fog the surface. The engine and the suspension deserve time, because the removable covers will leave them on show.

Who the model is for

  • Fans and collectors of the Vespa and of Italian design
  • Modelers who want a large, striking display piece
  • Lovers of civilian subjects: this is a lifestyle model, not a military kit
  • As an unusual gift for a scooter owner
  • Modelers willing to put in the time for a perfectly smooth body and a gloss finish

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For a scooter, 1:9 is a very large scale: the finished model is roughly 19.5 cm long and comes across as a full display exhibit. Bear that in mind when choosing a place for it.

Because it is painted to a gloss finish. Gloss paint emphasizes every scratch, seam and leftover trace of filler, unlike military vehicles, where imperfections hide under weathering and dust. It pays to sand the body thoroughly, prime it and spray in thin coats.

It is rather a kit for a more advanced beginner or an experienced modeler. The assembly itself is not extremely complicated, but the gloss surface and the chrome call for care.

Vespa owners and fans, lovers of Italian design and anyone who likes civilian subjects. It is not a military model, so it appeals to people outside classic modeling as well.
