A brown shade with a matte surface under the designation Brown Eng. Soot Matt, intended for weathering models. Soot is not purely black in nature: fresh deposit from an exhaust has a brown cast, because remains of unburnt fuel and oil stay in it. That is exactly why a brown-black trace looks more believable than one mixed from black alone. The matte surface matches that, as settled dirt does not return light.
Around exhausts and vents, on the traces trailing along a hull behind a muzzle, around engine covers, on the undersides of tanks and anywhere smoke settles on the real subject over a long time. On vehicles it pays to lead the trace in the direction of the airflow, that is backward and slightly upward, because the deposit follows the way the gases left. A sharply bounded patch gives the weathering away at first glance; the transition should be soft.
Before work, stir the contents of the container properly, as pigment settles at the bottom. Apply it in several very thin coats and let it stand for a while between them; the result is governed better by adding than by taking away. With an airbrush work at low pressure and from a greater distance, so that the edge of the trace stays soft. With a brush, good results can be had by stippling with an almost dry brush. The surface of the model should be settled under the weathering, and once it is finished, even the appearance out with a final varnish.
The package contains this product only. Thinner, an airbrush, brushes and other aids are not included, unless stated otherwise. Work in a well-ventilated room and store the container carefully closed out of the reach of children.
