A publication, not a kit. A volume from the Original Race Pictures picture series of the publisher Komakai, which brings modelers period racing photographs of one particular car. The series comes out in English as a paperback book. This volume is devoted to the Formula 1 cars Brabham BMW BT52 and BT52b.
The Brabham BT52 was the car in which Nelson Piquet took the world championship title in 1983. It is one of the most striking cars of its time: after the ban on the so-called ground-effect cars it was given a markedly wedge-shaped form widening toward the rear, with a lightened nose and the mass concentrated toward the rear axle. It was powered by a turbocharged BMW inline four-cylinder engine, and during the season the car received a revised BT52b version. For a modeler the car is rewarding precisely because its outline has no parallel in the history of Formula 1, and at the same time demanding, because the paint scheme and the sponsor markings have to line up exactly.
This volume rests on period photographs from the time the car was racing. The publisher has also issued a volume in the Ultra Detail Guide series on the same car, which is built instead on present-day detail photography of the surviving machine. The two books have a similar name, so check before you buy which of them you want: period photographs for the livery and the atmosphere, or present-day detail for the build.
