Eight brass rods of circular section half a millimeter in diameter and twenty-five centimeters long. Brass has two advantages over plastic: it is considerably stronger, so a thin part will not give way even when the model is handled, and it can be soldered, which on photo-etched assemblies means a joint that will not let go even after years.
Cut the rod with side cutters and sand the end, because after cutting it stays flattened and sharp. Use round-nose pliers to bend it, or bend it over a cylindrical object; done in the fingers, the curve comes out irregular. When gluing a pin into plastic, set it into a pre-drilled hole so that it seats along its whole length. Degrease the brass before painting and lay down a primer, or the paint will not hold on the smooth metal. The material can be soldered, which raises the strength of photo-etched structures markedly.
Store longer pieces straight, ideally in a tube or between two strips. Once a thin rod has been bent it can never be straightened perfectly, and it shows on the model.
The ends of the rods are sharp. Work carefully and keep the material out of the reach of children.
