ATOM acrylic paints for the British desert camouflage known as Caunter, of the kind worn by tanks in North Africa at the start of the war.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Caunter camouflage took its name from a British brigade commander whose armored unit put it into practice in Egypt in 1940. It consisted of sharply bounded, diagonally broken bands in three tones - light stone, cool blue-gray and dark slate. The pattern was not devised to make a vehicle blend into the sand but to confuse the estimate of shape and distance: the diagonal edge split the hull into two parts, which the eye at a distance joined into a different and much smaller object.
It was worn by Matildas, Valentines, the A9, A10 and A13 cruisers and the light Vickers tanks during Operation Compass and the fighting around Tobruk. After 1941 the pattern disappeared from the regulations and vehicles moved to a uniform sand tone, so Caunter remained the calling card of a single, but heavily photographed, period of the desert war.
The shades in this line are water-thinnable and intended for an airbrush. Because of the sharp edges of the pattern it pays to work with masking tape or liquid mask: the paint dries quickly, holds a thin film and the mask comes off it without tearing the edges. Anyone who wants a softer edge can spray the last transition freehand at lower pressure.
Desert vehicles only look convincing once the paint is broken up with dust. The matte film takes pigments and thin washes into the corners well.
It is worth noting that the exact tones of the pattern are still reconstructed mainly from black and white photographs and from fragmentary period regulations. Interpretations differ between authors, so the builder has a certain freedom: what decides is the contrast between the bands rather than the absolute value of each one.
