The third volume of the building series, devoted to settings and whole scenes. It shows step by step how the terrain, the buildings and the growth around a model come about.

A model built on a bare board stays a model. Only the ground, the wall behind it and the heap of rubble by the curb turn it into a scene that carries a story. That is precisely what the third volume of the series deals with: it takes apart the building of a setting from the base board through the rough modeling of the terrain to the small things a viewer notices only the second time around.
The center of gravity lies in the European battlefield of the Second World War, that is, where building is done most often: ruined urban buildings, country tracks with worn ruts, low stone walls, the banks of watercourses and the ruins of farm buildings. Beside that come more civilian settings too, where a scene is meant to speak about everyday traffic rather than about fighting.
The chapters proceed methodically. First the choice and preparation of the base, then modeling the mass, work with plaster and clay, creating renders and brickwork, painting the terrain, setting the vegetation in place and finally the finishing patina that unifies the whole area. Composition gets a space of its own, because the arrangement of the elements decides the result before any technique does.
The publication will serve builders who already manage the model itself and want to build a setting around it, and also those looking for concrete guides instead of general advice. The photographic documentation leads the individual procedures shot by shot, so it is clear what the area looks like at every stage of the work and when it is time to move on to the next step. For a builder who has so far only improvised terrain, that tends to be the greatest benefit of the whole publication.
