A dragon is not a single-colored animal. Whether we picture it as a reptile or as a creature closer to birds, its surface works with light: the back shades into a different tone from the belly, the wing membrane lets light through and the crest often carries a color that occurs nowhere else on the body. It is precisely this shift that sets a memorable beast apart from a green lizard, and it is also why one does not buy a single shade for dragons but a set.
Turquoise Green and Turquoise Blue form a pair that can be blended smoothly, so the back and the flanks need not be flat. Demon Purple deepens the shadow where black would kill the color. Space Magenta belongs on the wing membrane and the crest, because tissue with light coming through it should be warmer than a scale. Space Red is then left for the mouth, the eyes and the glowing places.
The two turquoises are laid side by side onto a still-wet surface and blended at the point where they meet with a dampened brush. The method takes repetition well, because every further layer softens the transition. On the membrane, by contrast, it pays off to go as thin as possible so that the relief of the veins stays visible. Anyone who wants to go further can add the lightest tone of the range to the crest, but that one is not in this set.
The same palette serves griffins, basilisks, sea monsters and fantastical fish. Wherever a creature is meant to read as unearthly, the combination of a cool body and a warm detail works. It suits magical effects, flames and glowing runes just as well.
