Snow, hoarfrost and a chipped finish

A winter campaign shows on a model sooner through the dirt than through the white paint. A vehicle that has driven through frozen mud has a frozen crust under the fenders, remnants of slush on the running gear, and on the upper surfaces only a thin film of powder snow that the wind has blown into the sheltered corners. The white winter finish was moreover done in haste, often with lime, and so it was rubbed off the edges and off the places the crew climbed over down to the original color.

According to the name there are eight pieces. The Effects Color Series line is not intended for painting a whole model but for finishing the surface off: it combines opaque tones for a finish and for dirt with materials that have a structure of their own and stay bulky once dry. Everything is water-based, so it can be removed before it dries and it will not attack the color beneath.

Recommended sequence of work

Finish the basic camouflage and the markings first, and only then the winter. Apply the white coat unevenly, so that the ground shows through, and rub it off on the edges and around the hatches. Keep the slush low down and never symmetrical, as the two sides of a machine get dirty differently. Add the powder snow right at the end and only in a small amount. The most common mistake is too much of a white crust. Real snow does not lie on a vehicle for long, but it will stay everywhere it is not visible at first glance.

Winter on the base

The scene around the machine has to match it. A frozen rut driven through a field, little heaps of cleared snow at the edge and dark water in the hollows will do more for an impression of frost than the best finish on the vehicle itself. It also helps to leave part of the terrain bare, because a continuous white area takes the depth out of a scene.
